Hi, I’m Alison.

Welcome to East by Middle West - where I explore what life has to offer from my little corner of the internet.

I’m from a small town in Illinois (Marseilles, to be exact – pronounced in an American accent as “mar sales” not like the French city) now living in Des Moines, Iowa. I love being from a small town where my grandpa was a barber and grandma was a beautician and everyone I met knew a member of my family, though I can’t imagine living in a small town again, it sure is fun to be from one!

In 2007 I married my high school sweetheart. We didn’t date through college, but once we got back together it was a done deal. Dating to marriage in 3 months!

A few years after I graduated from college (with a Bachelor’s in Cell and Molecular Biology and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration) we moved to the Washington D.C. area so I could work for a national nonprofit. We were “out east” for 4 years and loved every minute of it; especially since we got to host several family vacations as tour guides to our nation’s capital.

In June of 2014 we bought our home in the Beaverdale Neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa. We are enjoying spending time with family (my husband’s extended family surrounds us), playing with our dog (Penny) in our backyard, making new friends, and getting to know our adopted city.

I’m starting this blog to share my recipes, crafts, room makeovers, and other things that delight me.

I hope you’ll stick around so we can explore together!
